Top tip – Watch what you are feeding your hound
Well think about it – greyhounds are not supposed to get chubby – they just wouldn’t look right. We decided to feed Hippie twice a day on a dried lamb and rice food but soaked for 10 minutes in warm water. She was having such an assortment of treats while we were house training and kennel training that we made the decision to reduce the weight of each meal until things calmed down. She also likes dinner scraps – particularly fish pie.
Her treats include pig’s ears which smell vile – tripe sticks, gravy bones, stuffed bones and multi coloured biscuits – it just doesn’t matter she loves them all.
As a supplement to her diet we have also given one teaspoonful of cod liver oil every day with one of her meals. The effect is amazing – she used to have a lot of dandruff in her coat and after one week of this it started to clear up, it is also good for her joints.
It’s better if you can feed dried food dry. That way as the dog eats it they get a dental as they bite into the kibble. And greyhounds, being prone to tartar build up, need all the dentals they can get.
The Beastly Beasts are fed dried food with something else mixed in to make it more appetising (though I use the dried food as treats and they do like it). The “something” can be tinned food (only takes a spoonful), pilchards, natural yoghurt, baked beans, pasta, rice, egg, etc.
Thanks Chris,
yes since writing that our girl has her food quite crunchy although, bless her she’s not at all fazed by the use of her toothbrush – she’s very girly – I must write a bath time blog and add some photo’s.
Bye the way – Hippie doesn’t seem to drink much water – have you any ideas on that one – just in case the summer arrives?
I don’t have any concrete ideas on why Hippie doesn’t drink much water; I tend to think animals will drink what they need. At times I have to fill water bowls continually, others it goes all day without seemingly being touched. You could try a adding some Apple Cider Vinegar; The Beastly Beasts seem to quite like it and it’s good for them.
If the weather gets hot I put a block of ice in the water. I use a take-away dish to make a “giant” ice cube and put it in whole. That way it lasts longer and keeps the water cooler for longer compared with putting “normal” ice cubes in.
Thanks so much for that Chris, I tried the frozen block yesterday at The RGT event at Barlow Show and it worked a treat – she also got a first for the cleanest teeth!!!!
