Wonderful! I spent a happy afternoon picking blackberries and making bramble jelly with my two today - a few disasters but we got there.... and yes, Bert was there to lick up the spills! x

We did the butter icing bit on Sunday when Toria wanted to make butterfly buns. I was chief advisor and in charge of washing up - she did really well tho and of course Hippie helped to lick out the bowl.

Oh, I remember the days of jam-making so well! Mum didn't do much in the way of bottling, because we lived in London when I was very young, then moved to a house with a very small garden. She used to grow mint though, and a few raspberries and strawberries.

Going further back, I remember staying with my grandparents, and they did use to grow their own vegetables. I must only have been a toddler, judging by my memory of the height of the pea plants - he didn't used to support them, they just flopped, market gardener style, and I'd rummage among the plants and stuff myself with raw peas! Happy days!

It's nice that your daughter is learning to make jam! The last phone call I had from my younger son was 'Mum, how do you make butter icing?' He was making his friend a birthday cake, bless him!
