I can't help you, Kate. The only time I use my extractor is when I'm using the pressure cooker ... though with my new one it produces so little steam that I mostly don't bother. LOL!

Anyway. Good luck! Meanwhile, there's an award for you at my place. :)

Thanks Moon at least you're honest - I'm not good with it either but I have learnt to give it a go.

K8 - you are a star!!! A girl after my own heart there - thank you..... I booked an electrician to come and give me a quote the other day - he hasn't sent the quote yet but just listening to him helped loads. I'm going to order the unit next week and, as you said I got the installation instructions from the website.
Electrician said the ducting probably wouldn't need replacing but I might just get it anyway and then I will be almost there.... I now know which electrics need to be turned off now too after he climbed onto the worktops and worked it all out, bless him and bless you too for the support. I'll put a post up on the new one when its fitted. x

I haven't done this before, but I have total faith in your ability to work it out.

Start to disassemble it slowly, remembering how things slot home. When you remove the outer wooden part I'm sure it'll prove easier than it looks.

Wiring is always dodgy, but as long as you remember to trip the fuse to the OFF position (and maybe the kitchen circuit too to be sure?) before mucking about with the cooker you should be fine! The external flap is purely cosmetic, the unit you buy will have a metal counterpart which should be easy to attach.

Look up the make and model of the fan you're about to buy, sometimes you find installation procedures on their website. If not, you could email them for more information?

Good on ya, girl. I applaud DIY attempts, 90% of the time it's the thought of doing something new that's scary... the act itself is usually simple as long as it doesn't require odd parts! Good luck :)

I'd go for one that's out permanently and flicked on with a switch personally - like our one....

A metallic one of these might go with anything?!

Thank you kindly sir she said.... the one that I have seen looks like it has a blue panel which really won't go with anything - I'm just hoping that is temporary - for the photo maybe?

I've never fitted one of those I'm afraid. If you get a good looking one you could forget about putting the matching panel on.

Glad to be of no help at all .........

oh dear - I will try to get a picture tomorrow... the hob unit is the top inset piece that saucepans and woks etc go on - the fan is above it - between two cupboards with a door that pulls forward to start the fan (if it worked!) -it extracts the steam to outside the bungalow - well it would if it worked!!!!

Can't really explain it better than that.... Yes we are quite strange are we not?

Sorry to laugh at your troubles, but this one did give rise to laughter. I know what a kitchen extraction fan hood is (I think), but what the devil is a hob? And I have never seen a kitchen fan with a door. Love to see a picture of this one.

You really do things differently on the other side of the pond, don't you?

Good luck.
