A Garden Makeover!

by Kate on October 18, 2009

One of the biggest attractions for me when I bought this house was the fact that it had no garden. Blocked paved at the front, continued all through the car port area at the side then a large sand-stoned slab area at the back. I already had problems with both wrists and really didn’t want to be gardening – a few pots full of pretty flowers, I thought I could handle that.

I succumbed quite early to building a raised bed in one corner, well it wasn’t too much to deal with and it meant I could fill it with bulbs and shrubs.

And they all survived – not bad for me as I have never been really good with plants.

The problems with drainage started this year really after the ‘proper’ roof was fitted to the carport area and any rain ran down this new roof, onto the garage roof then poured down the back of the garage into an ineffectual soakaway.

All 005

It looked okay from the inside until I discovered a pool of water coming up through the garage floor – that was when I really started to look at how the whole area had been created….

All the other gardens are raised or tiered at the back – so that they are level with the road beyond the property, but the previous owner of my bungalow had dug out all the soil down to the clay bed to make the area flat enough to lay slabs. this meant that the road at the back of my garden and the garage at the side are a good two feet higher than my garden. It also meant that any water getting into the back garden could not drain away – the clay was too dense. The previous owner had also put concrete collars around the drains so rainwater couldn’t get out that way either.

After much thought I decided to take the slabs up at the side of the garage, dig down two spade depths into the clay, and fill the whole area with hardcore and gravel – this would help to soak some of the water away and as Hippie likes to use a gravelled area as her toilet (liquid only, readers) – it would make it easy to keep clean.

And Hippie approved too!

Once this was done there seemed little point in keeping the rest of it slabbed so decided to go all out for drainage and have a small area next to the raised bed dug out and filled with topsoil for the rest of my potted shrubs and trees, then another 48 slabs were to come up and turf the area at the end of the garden.

I ordered all the materials and my daughter and her boyfriend completed the gravelled area and made headway into getting the garden area dug out. My son had arranged to come up and help but we knew it was too much to tackle in one weekend so my girl did me proud working on the project whenever she could.

And of course, like all greyhound’s Hippie just had to join in.

Then last weekend my son came up as arranged – and the three of them got on with it – they started on the Friday night in the pouring rain and the dark..

garden and others 077

It was really late when they finished and they were so wet

garden and others 081

But – they shifted two tons of soil and took up countless slabs ready to lay the turf the next morning.

It was hot showers, large glasses of wine and a takeaway that night – ready to start again the next morning.

……..

And they did, they shifted sand from underneath where the slabs had been and dressed the area with soil – I pottered round them all painting the wall round the edge of the garden and sweeping all the residue soil away. the sun shone thank goodness and bless them – they worked all day.

garden and others 082

I couldn’t believe how it was suddenly coming together, that turf went down easier than laying a carpet.

garden and others 083

My daughters boyfriend knew how depressed I had been about all this and kept giving me hugs and thumbs up’s (see above) he knew it would be nice when it was done!

I went off and got dinner sorted – the very least I could do in the circumstances – but I kept a watchful eye on them…

garden and others 084

And suddenly – it was finished..

garden and others 086

Cleared of rubble and looking amazing – time to celebrate!!

garden and others 085

And lets not forget the night view as anyone who knows me will also know my love of fairy lights so having painted the side of the garage, the lights went up!

garden and others 091

Very pretty!!

What a weekend!! It was big thanks all round to my wonderful kids – my son stayed until Sunday afternoon and sorted out some of the electrical nightmares that this house has – he says he’s coming back to do a wiring job but then again he has seen the wiring in the loft – I’m not allowed up there!!!

And now – I am diligently watering the turf daily, and keeping Hippie off it – though she keeps looking longingly at it… trouble is she could rip it all up in 5 seconds flat – so its no go area for quite some time.

One girl and her dog

by Kate on September 5, 2009

Thank you to Jay at the Depp Effect for this meme…. Find the fourth photo in your picture folders and explain it’, she said!!

So I have… and yes I am just as disorganised with my pictures as everybody else!!

But here it is:

DSC_0140

Many of you will already know about Hippie and her dog blog which is featured on the right of this blog, and the ones who have read the early chapters will know how out of control this beautiful creature was when she came to stay.

But after the initial mayhem she became quite easy to train and here is an early shot of a ’sit’ and ’shake a paw’ moment.

These animals are so beautiful and intelligent and it should be remembered when adopting a retired greyhound that:

They have never lived in a house before….

And… they can learn so much given time, love and a lot of patience.

Believe me – they make it all so worthwhile!

So I have to pass it forward with the same message……

I have to choose … Baino – cos her photography is something else, Daddy Papersurfer … go on lets see your 4th photo …… and Don’t Bug Me …..for the penguins and other stories

Find the fourth photo in your picture folders and explain it!!!!

Wanted – a jobseeker!!!

by Kate on August 21, 2009

Its been a really busy time at work recently. The plus side of this is that the small company I joined a year ago is entering a period of rapid growth. Not bad in this day and age.

So I was really pleased when I was asked to start recruiting for one or more ’support’ people.

I really wanted to employ a young person, give them a start, help them to feel good about themselves. I’ve done this before in a previous role and thoroughly enjoyed coaching and training people until they were able to mentor the next new recruit.

Why then – do you think, that even though this role is advertised in every job centre, no-one is applying?

We are a country in recession, unemployment is at an all time high and all I want is someone with very good written and spoken English to make outbound calls.

Is there really an unemployment problem?

On a slightly different theme I watched a TV program about Benefit Busters last night. It showed a training course where single mothers on benefits would be given the skills and confidence to get back into the workplace.

It worked and it was good to see some of these ladies working all except one! Bless her, she wanted to work but she had four children and got more money on benefits than going out to work would bring in. What a system eh?

There was one thing in this course that really irritated me – the trainer was asking the women what the benefits of earning a wage would be, one of the answers was ‘money coming in’ and I was astounded at the trainer’s reaction:

“Yes, money coming in …. its the difference between buying the value range at the supermarket and buying Birds Eye.”

I think maybe they should add a week to this course and teach them to cook, then they could really learn how to economise!!!

In the meantime….does anyone want a job?????

I do like to be beside the sea-side!

by Kate on August 9, 2009

I have had a lovely weekend, Ade and I went to Caister to see his parents. They are really nice people and made us so welcome!

When we got there my ‘adopted Mum’ had made lunch for us and after that had gone down we headed for the beach.

I was a beautiful day, hot sunshine and no wind. I just had to have a paddle..

caister 001

And guess what… the water was warm!!! People were actually swimming in the sea!!

Ade and his Mum stayed by the edge though – not for them sand between their toes!

caister 002

We stopped at a local pub for a drink and decided we would go back there for dinner later on as they had a band on at weekends.

caister 003

Well I think my glasses suit you young lady….. very Harry Potter!!!

The meal was wonderful, the band were good, amazingly so – we sang along and had such a good time!

caister 004

The boys were happy…

caister 005

And so were the girls…

And this morning we travelled back – it was too short a visit really but very special!!

So now I’ll get on with the ironing ready for work in the morning!!!

Thank you Vera and Mal – you are lovely people!!!!

Another Pleasant Midlands Sunday!

by Kate on July 26, 2009

Well,  here we are, its the end of July and yes, its raining outside!

Where oh where have the idyllic summers of my youth disappeared to?

But, it has saved me from weeding the raised bed in my large patio of a garden – some of you will remember that my daughter bought me a selection of plants for that very bed on Mother’s Day this year.

They have been doing very well

garden 005

Some of them have already flowered once and are looking as though they will again, others are flowering now:

garden 003

Although something has been chomping at the pansies..

garden 002

The hebes and my pretty potentilla are doing remarkably well considering I know nothing about gardening!!!

garden 004

But the weeds are having a ‘field day’ – pun intended.

Never mind I’ll deal with them next weekend – if it doesn’t rain!

Oh by the way do you remember this guy?

garden 001

The cutting brought back from Tenerife….. this was taken one month ago….

Just look at him now!

garden 006

I’m obviously doing something right for a change!!!!

The Power of ‘The Blog’!

by Kate on July 17, 2009

For many years I dealt with customer complaints, customers would ring me or turn up at my place of work and I would listen to them ranting about their purchase (cars – a very emotive subject), it never did me any harm. BUT it did teach me the right way to complain should the need arise.

If I have to complain about anything I do it so nicely people usually thank me for bringing the matter to their attention, it works and nobody needs to rant.

Yesterday I decided I had had enough of a mascara that I had purchased. Black, volumising and waterproof, if you believe the label.

The reality was that it was black, runny and went everywhere but my eyelashes. I gave up and went to the company website to search for an address to send it back to.

The website was very pretty, full of glamorous ladies, just as it should be – but there was no address….

There was, however, a ‘contact us’ form, I decided to go for that and ask for an address…

I filled in my contact details but the next field really surprised me:

‘Are you a blogger?’

Mmmm I’ve been called that before so ‘Yes’

Next question:

‘Will you be reviewing the outcome of this on your weblog?’

I was given choices – ‘no’, ‘maybe’ ‘probably’ or ‘definitely’

I chose the latter – I had not thought of it before, but, depending on the outcome, I might just have to iRamble about it.

I filled in the free comments box, telling the company about my problem and clicked the send button.

I thought I might have received an email or phone call just to let me know they had received my complaint, but, strangely enough I have heard nothing yet!

Now, why is that I wonder?

Is it because I might blog about it? Or do they really not care about their customers? Or, maybe they get so many complaints they haven’t got round to mine yet?

OR, and I like to think this might be the reason – my complaint has been passed to a higher bod who deals with bloggers and the fact that they might tell the world wide web about their experience? See, that is power!!!!

Sadly, the reality is the website may have had a problem and they didn’t receive my request – I’ll try again today!

True Love

by Kate on July 9, 2009

This would normally be one for my dog blog but maybe my readers here  can help us find a solution.

Our three year old greyhound suffers from separation anxiety, so much so that if we leave her loose in the house for any length of time she destroys things….. lots of things…. things like carpets and shoes etc.

She has an indoor kennel which she loves (thank goodness) , it looks like a play pen with her duvet and stuffed toys delicately placed (by her) inside. Normally we can shut her in her kennel with a radio on for short periods during the day.

During the heat wave last week we decided to move her kennel outside into the carport, so that she could have the run of the garden but still have the safety of her playpen if she chose.

Hippie was only left for an hour and the neighbours were complaining because of the howling and barking, add to that she had destroyed anything she could find out there and, worse than that, she was distressed…

So, we have had to bring everything back indoors and still have the problem… she only does this (I am told) because she loves us and wants to find us …..

Has anyone got any more ideas on how to help her?

Once bitten…….

by Kate on July 1, 2009

Female Tabanus Horse Fly
Creative Commons License photo credit: Opo Terser

I got home from my weekend away on Sunday to discover that my daughter had been bitten on the arm by an insect whilst walking the dog on Saturday.

Considering she didn’t feel a thing it looked very swollen and red – there wasn’t much we could do about it though on a Sunday so a dose of  anti-histamine was administered and lets see how it is in the morning…..

Monday morning came and my girl was in a lot of pain – her arm had swollen and there were little blisters appearing.

She was on a late shift at work that day so booked a doctors appointment.

The doctor said “Oh God!” when he saw it which, on reflection, is enough to scare any patient – he then prescribed two different anti biotics and drew a line in biro around the affected area – telling her if the swelling and redness crossed the line she would need intravenous anti-biotics.

On Tuesday morning it seemed a little easier with less redness although the redness had definitely crossed the doctor’s line, in fact the area was going white – my daughter said she would update the doctor but she felt it was improving.

She saw a different doctor who said he thought it had gone past an allergic reaction and that he was going to treat her for cellulitis. He told her to go home and wait for a phone call to arrange for an i.v canula to be inserted and anti biotics to be given through it.

The first pair of nurses came last night fitted the canula, and gave the first dose.

july 1 003

This morning it is still looking swollen and angry and is painful but my daughter says it is not as bad as before pain-wise…..

july 1 004

Hopefully, with district nurses calling twice a day to administer  the drugs – she will now start to get better.

To be fair she is more worried about missing work after only a short time at her new job …. that is the least of my worries as you can imagine!!!

Firstly I want to kill the insect …… if it’s not dead already!!!!
